It’s Eusexua season, bitch!

The weather on Sunday night in New York City might have been soaring down toward the teens, but the girls and gays still trekked to the hallowed corner of Myrtle Avenue for a night of Eusexua at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel. The post-snow wind chill outside was unforgiving, but the energy inside the building grew throughout the night with a fervor so visceral that the top floor was vibrating (and not just from the J train zooming past every 20 minutes).

Billed as a birthday celebration and a prelude to her new album, Eusexua, the event was more than just that. It was a moment frozen in time, a truly immersive experience. Market Hotel was the perfect setting for FKA twigs to unfurl a glimpse into her otherworldly creation with its gritty local charm, an intimate stage set to the corner overlooking the neighborhood metro and a dance floor just big enough to creak under the most dedicated fans. It perfectly incapsulated the rave-y influence of the Eusexua era. International icons of the ever-evolving underground MCMLXXXV (of Berlin’s Herrensauna) and Fashion guided us to a state of eusexua en-masse, with their live DJ sets both true to their own sound in harshness and euphoria. The journey had begun.

Within the crowd was a who’s who of New York nightlife, fashion and music. PAPER gossip-girl-about-town Linux had walked us to the venue from a quick linkup around the block prior to the event, and a slew of twinks and dolls followed her onto the stage (naturally) to wait for Twigs and dance their asses off in the meantime. Archivist and it-girl Fashionfaguette was on doll-and-gay duo duty (as she’s known to be), pairing girls with a fab gay to ensure we never have to dance alone. At one point, as I pushed my way back towards the crowd from switching to my second look in the corner, I accidentally bumped into thee JT — yes, that JT, who flashed a quick protective smile at her bodyguard appearing out of nowhere to remind me who we were dealing with. It was one of those nights where it seemed like every person in the room was somebody, but nobody cared because the true star was already in the center of it all before she even entered the room.

When Twigs made her appearance, she seemed to rise out of the crowd, her stage a fishbowl surrounded by fans on every side and a wall of outreached arms both in front of and behind her. Her brief set (interrupted by us singing “Happy Birthday” to her) was dreamy performance art and ethereal in nature. The energy she exuded flowed seamlessly with the experimental production of Eusexua. The new songs — “Eusexua,” “Room of Fools,” “Drums of Death” — felt primal, each beat traveling from the speakers onto our lifted hands and landing in our chest as she sang right into our eyes. When Twigs debuted a new track, “Striptease,” the room went feral, and the walls joined us in sweating.

No one cared about the heat, though. Twigs had commanded every ounce of our attention. The only thing that mattered was her voice, her body moving and the shared experience of being led to a state of eusexua. We had grown into one organism: sweaty, raw and chic.

FKA twigs’ vision has been one long enjoyed by her dedicated fans, but this night, in all its fever dream glory, felt like validation that her art is reaching a whole new level — an extraordinary promise of what’s to come. And if Eusexua is anything like that night, you’re gonna gag (complimentary)!
